The Apple Car

Apple's rumored electric car project may be known as "Titan." Titan is the nickname of a former UK government intelligence base. The Cupertino, California-based company is said to have a fleet of vans registered to a California address. Apple employees have also been seen using large trucks to transport materials.

Details on the Apple Car are scarce. Some experts speculate that Apple has been working on a sedan (similar to the Model S sedan) with a range of 400 miles. Others claim that the Apple car is a crossover SUV with an electric drivetrain, similar to the Model X. This SUV is speculated to have its own "underpinnings." Apple employees are taking road trips to various Tesla stores around the country to collect information on new technologies.

The Mission of the Apple Car

According to Apple, its mission in the automobile market is to create a design of vehicles, software, and hardware that is "as beautiful as it is advanced, that will be as easy to use as it is liberating." The objective of the project is to focus on research and development for three specific areas: autonomous driving, electric vehicles, and in-car entertainment.

An Updated Tim Cook Interview

Apple CEO Tim Cook spoke to Bloomberg about the electric car project, calling it "one of the most important things we can do." In February 2016, he told NPR that an Apple electric car was not on the horizon.

The Executive that Told Tim Cook to Cut Off the Car Project

That said, in March 2016, Cook told NBC News that Apple was currently focused on autonomous driving technology for cars.

Who Is Leading the Project?

Apple does not have a leader, rather it is a multi-disciplinary team working together.

The only one who has published about the project is Tony Fadell, the former CEO of Nest Labs.

According to an article in September 2017 by Forbes, Fadell has been mentioned in the article but was not named.

What Is Titan Called?

According to the website Apple.com, it was named Titan and it was launched in June 2014.

It is one of the largest and most advanced labs at Apple.

When Does it Exist?

Titan is not an internal project at Apple, but the US government can require that Apple submit its proposals for an official project with the Department of Energy (DOE) if the project exceeds $500,000.

Why Apple Wants to Make an Electric Car?

The simple answer is because Apple thinks electric cars have a bright future. The question is, how? Why would Apple want to make an electric car?

Apple’s lack of interest in fuel cell cars (read more here), their belief that there is a real future in electric cars, and their decision to take a highly involved approach to research, designing, and eventually manufacturing an electric car that can compete with established players will show how Apple is looking to leave a footprint and ultimately take a lead on the next generation of technology.

Apple has poured billions of dollars into research and development and could easily fund a new electric car venture with the aim of creating a new industry.

A few months back, Apple bought Zero Motorcycles.

Who Will Be the Main Competition for the Apple Car?

This question is still not resolved.

Apple is working on an electric car that might be launched within the next 5-10 years. The major competitors are Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL).

However, it is also possible that the competition between Apple and Tesla will increase as time passes by. The Wall Street Journal reported that Tesla and Apple are already talking about the partnership and working together on Apple’s electric car.

Can also possible that Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) may join them. As of right now, however, nothing has been officially confirmed as well.

If Apple’s car project hits the market, it will compete against the Tesla Model S and the Tesla Model X.

When Does Apple Think That It Will Launch Its Electric Vehicle?

This is where it gets really confusing. Apple has repeatedly denied the existence of an electric car project but this information is supported by credible sources who have reported the number of employees working on Apple's electric car project. The only thing that is unclear here is when we will see the first electric car from Apple.

Regarding the number of employees working on the project, in April 2017, The Information reported that Apple had around 1,000 engineers working on Titan. This number was confirmed by the Bloomberg Technology website which also revealed that 1,000 employees are not too bad for a car project. It would suggest that at least half of the employees working on the project are on-site in California.

Conclusion

Let us examine all the above in the next few sections.
